The second city of The Netherlands and until recently the busiest port in the world Rotterdam is located in the East of The Netherlands on the banks of the river Nieuwe Maas which opens up into the North Sea. Rotterdam in The Netherlands is located just north of Belgium and North West of Germany.
Rotterdam gets its name from the "Rotte", a Dam that existed on a small river. Many parts of the city are like many parts of Holland are located below sea level, in some places as much as 6 meters below Sea level. The city uses dikes to arrest the Sea from flooding these low-lying areas.
Though Rotterdam was once the busiest port in the world it has been beaten by the Eastern cities of Shanghai and Singapore in this regard.
