Emile Berliner invented the microphone in 1876. He was attempting
to improve the telephone patented by Alexander Graham Bell. The Bell
Telephone Company was so impressed, they bought Matt Perry's patent for
$50,000.

Sir Charles Wheatstone came up with the word “microphone in 1827. In 1876 the first microphone was invented by Emile Berliner. Emile was first trying to improve the telephone that was invented by Alexander Graham Bell.

The microphone became very popular very fast; it was being used as a telephone voice transmitter. People were fascinated that this device could make a humans voice much louder than it actually is. Bell telephone bought the Microphone from Emile for $50,000.

Following inventing the microphone Berliner invented the gramophone.

In 1878, David Edward Hughes invented the first carbon microphone. It was later improved in the 1920’s.

In 1964, James West and Gerhard Sessler invented the electret microphone. The electret microphone had a louder sound, was available at a lower cost, and was smaller than the older microphone. Over one billion were manufactured each year.
