Having not read your material but having a Bachelors degree in Psychology I'm going to guess an example of this would be if a person did not hold similar beliefs to the speaker like if someone was trying to describe a spiritual experience. A person may need to be able to identify with information to take it in and process it. Also if a person has a psychological shut down while receiving information for example if someone was told a family member was murdered. Shock may inhibit them from hearing anything after the initial information of the murder. There are probably more examples but maybe this will get you started.
