Bora Bora is one of the Leeward Islands of French Polynesia. Surrounded by a lagoon and coral reef, Bora Bora is the archetypal desert island, with lush green vegetation, palm fringed beaches and twin peaks that skirt the remnants of an extinct volcano.
The island is home to around 7,000 people today, but its population was vastly increased during the Second World War when it hosted a forward supply base for the US military.
