Silver (Ag) is a metal and therefore has metallic properties i.e is malleable (is able to be shaped without breaking).  Silver Nitrate (AgNO3) is an ionic compound (and NO3 is a covalent molecular compound) and therefore does not have metallic properties but instead has a mixture between ionic and covalent molecular properties. I.e. Is brittle
