There are many Filipino chemists and they have all contributed greatly to science and engineering. Some are more widely known than others and this is mainly due to them doing or inventing something that has had a worldwide effect. Although, I'm only listing a few below, there are many more and just because they have not done something extraordinary in the global scientific environment, it does not mean that their contributions are not scientific or that they are not chemists.

All of the below chemists have National Scientist status in the Philippines.

  • Julian Banzon created different methods of using alternative sources for fuels. These alternative ethel ester fuels mainly came from the use of sugarcane and coconut. These are two Filipino native materials and using the excess of these for fuels is seen as good for the economy and an achievement in Filipino science.
  • Francisco Santos studied typical Filipino foods and the diet of Filipinos. From looking at the chemical composition of the foods that are a staple in Filipino diet, he managed to identify and solve issues to do with diet and to educate people to eat certain foods in their diet in moderation to keep them healthier.
  • Alfredo Santos was a pharmacist who researched Filipino medicinal plants, their effects and how they can be used in alternative medicine.
  • Lourdes Jansuy Cruz researched the properties of toxins in the native Conus marine snails. Her research was later used for research into human brain probes.
  • Pio  Andeade is a Filipino chemist who has researched radiation chemistry, textile chemistry, pesticide chemistry and biomass energy. Through the many mediums he has researched, he became an adviser to government agencies, businesses, non-government agencies, religious groups and community projects when they are looking into the effects of rural industrialization, appropriate technology, alternative energy and livelihood generation.
