Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) was set up in 1950 under an Act of the Government. The Corporation started operation in 1952. The objective was to set up such industrial units in which private investors were not investing. Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) operated for ten years and set up a large number of units in public sectors.

Under the decentralized policy of the government, Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) was bifurcated for eastern and western wings of the country.
