Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) was set up in 1950 under an Act of the Government. The Corporation started operation in 1952. The objective was to set up such industrial units in which private investors were not investing. Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) operated for ten years and set up a large number of units in public sectors.

Under the decentralized policy of the government, Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) was bifurcated for eastern and western wings of the country. Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) is responsible of planning, promoting, organizing and implementing program for the establishment of industries in schedule. Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) is also responsible of exploration, exploitation and development of minerals and mines thereof.

The government has number of corporations; the activities of Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) are confined to textile, woolen mills, carpets, sugar, forest, paper mills and ironores. A number of complete projects have been handed over to private owners. In the field of labour management relationship, the corporation has set a good example of welfare of workers.
