Arturo Alcaraz, Raymundo Punongbayan, Alexis Belonio and Dr Czarina Saloma are the famous Filipino scientists who excel in the field of Physical Sciences.
• Arturo Alcaraz
Alcaraz is a Filipino volcanologist. He was named bureau chief of the Geo-physical division which monitors the eruption of Mayon Volcano in 1948. He is recipient of a number of scholarship grants at the Opalocka Naval Station in Florida to study micro seismology and as a Guggenheim fellow and a scholarship at University of California at Berkley. His contributions in the field of Volcanology and the development of geothermal energy merited a Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1982.
• Raymundo Punongbayan
Dr Punongbayan is a BS Geology major from the University of the Philippines and thereafter, he obtained his PhD in Geology from the University of Colorado. He is one of the leading authorities in the fields of volcanology and seismology. He claim to fame is when he handled and monitor the catastrophic July 16, 1990 Luzon Earthquake and the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991.
• Engr. Alexis Belonio
Belonio is the brains behind the innovative rice husk stoves. His invention merited him the 2008 Rolex Award for Enterprise. He started working on his economical and green invention in 2003 when fuel prices were up in the Philippines. It has a small fan powered by batteries or electricity and it has sufficient ventilation as such, the resulting project does not have smoke and does not have a tar like residue. Most importantly it is inexpensive and is affordable to low income Filipino family in the rural areas.
• Dr. Czarina Saloma
Saloma is one of the youngest award-winning Filipino scientists. Her innovative work involves the preservation of tradition using technology. Her pioneering work shows a detailed analysis of the uses and meanings of the pre-World War II houses in the province of Bohol. Dr Saloma is a Sociology major from the University of the Philippines; thereafter, she pursued her MA in Population Studies at Peking University in China and a magna cum laude doctorate degree from Universitaet Bielefeld in Germany.
