The main kinds of apparatus will consist of many things from the most basic to the more complex. For example, most labs use a work bench in order to allow easy use of the equipment. A source of heat is another example and could be a Bunsen burner to an electrical hotplate. Other examples are:

• Cooling Devices.
Some work will require refrigeration and very low temperatures. In fields such as cryogenics and superconductor research, extremely low temperatures are required, leading to the use of cooling devices such as liquid nitrogen and incredibly powerful freezers.

• Glassware.
Test tubes, beakers, tubing, condensers, reagent bottles and so on.

• Measuring Devices.
These can range from a simple pipette, scales, mass spectrometers, calorimeters or thermometers.  Litmus paper would fall into this category.

• Observational Equipment.
This covers such things as microscopes, telescopes, photo electric cells for turbidity tests, and so on.

• Specialized Equipment.
This tends to be more associated with particular research fields. Cloud chambers, cell growth incubators or operant conditioning chambers are good examples of specialized laboratory equipment. Biochemistry labs may have fume cupboards, glassware and heated water baths.

Some specialized equipment will arise from a requirement for apparatus that does not exist at that time. This will lead to the creation of bespoke pieces of apparatus that will fall into the category of specialized equipment.

• Collating Equipment.
This can range from a standard personal computer to a super computer. The data generated from the laboratory will require some form of formatting and interpretation.

There are two main types of laboratory: Experimental or data measurement. In addition, different disciplines will need different types of equipment.
