Some don't consider Australia a continent, so it might be considered the largest island (yet still the 6th largest country).  But some think it should have continent status because it has unique plant and animal life and place it within a continent called Australasia.  Australia has an area of 7,617,930 sq km (2,941,285 sq miles)

Otherwise, the largest island would be Greenland.
Greenland has an area of 2,166,086 sq km (836,109 sq miles)
