Pneumococci are bacteria from the species Streptococcus pneumoniae. They are pairs of comma shaped bacteria that commonly cause bacterial pneumonia. The bacteria can also cause middle ear infections and bacterial meningitis and can be very severe and even fatal.

Vaccines for Streptococcus pneumoniae have been developed and are given to people in high risk groups - the elderly, infants and children, people with advanced lung disease or lung transplants.

Alpha haemolytic streptococci are Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria that produce an antiphagocytic capsule that prevents the immune system of the body being able to get rid of them.

Saprophytic Neisseria are bacteria from the genus Neisseria which includes the pathogenic species Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrheae. These cause meningitis and gonorrheae respectively. Saprophytic Neisseria belong to other species, which are non-pathogenic. They are present in the body, in the respiratory tract and genital tract, but they do not cause disease. They are purely commensal and are probably of benefit to the body as they help resist infection by pathogenic species of bacteria.
