Matters sold, like carpet, etc. Are always sold in square measure. The material comes in various widths. Therefore, one linear foot of such material, if it came in 5-foot width, would be equal to 5 square feet.
If someone were to buy a piece of one foot length, she would have bought 5 square feet.
