The term monoploid cells is used to define a cell or an organism which has only one set of chromosomes or a single set of chromosomes. Another word which is similar in meaning to the word monoploid is the word haploid. The word monoploid can be used both as an adjective and as a noun.

When the word monoploid is used as an adjective, it is used to define a cell or an organism which has only one set of chromosomes or a single set of chromosomes. When the word monoploid is used as a noun, it is used to define a monoploid cell or a monoploid organism.

Monoploid cells are produced by a process which is known as meiosis. During the process of meiosis, the precursors to the germ cells have the number of their chromosomes halved. This halving of the number of chromosomes which are present in the precursors to germ cells is done by randomly choosing a homologue, and it results in haploid germ cells.
