Lanarkshire was once a county in Scotland but has now been absorbed into the City of Glasgow and the Councils of North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire. It is located to the South of Stirlingshire, Southwest of Stirlingshire, Midlothian and West Lothian, and West of Peeblesshire.
Lanarkshire for some unspecified reason was considered as three different counties based on upper, middle and lower wards until the Local Government Act was passed in the year 1889.
In the year 1975 the county council was phased out by the Strathclyde region. Which itself was later phased out by unitary authorities in the year 1996.
At present Lanarkshire is enclosed by the committee areas of North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire and the city of Glasgow. North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire have together formed a common board for valuation and electoral registration.
