The average surface temperature of the sun is 6,000 degrees centigrade. This outer layer of the sun is called photosphere and is the most prominent feature in the solar system. This layer has a mottled exterior due to the tumultuous eruptions of energy at the outer surface. Chromosphere is the layer just above the photosphere and this is where the sun's flare emerges from. Flares are the dazzling filaments of hot gases which emerge from the dark depressions on the photosphere having a temperature of 4,000°C.

The outer region of the Sun's atmosphere is known as Corona where immense clouds of glowing gas, erupting from the Chromosphere, appear. The external region of the corona stretches far-off into space and comprises particles traveling at a snail's pace away from the Sun. Corona can be seen only during total solar eclipses.

The Sun appears to have been on the go for 4.6 billion years and has an adequate amount of fuel to go on for a further five billion years.
