Fuerteventura is one of the Canary Islands belonging to Spain. It is in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the coast of Africa and about 100Kms from Cape Juby in Morocco. It is also the second largest of the Canary Islands after Tenerife.

The original inhabitants are supposed to have come from Africa and are called Mahorero or Maho, a word that means" goatskin shoe" in the local language. In ancient times the island's name was Planaria.

Fuerteventura is a very popular tourist destination. Water sports like windsurfing and water skiing draw thousands to the island every year. Every July the island hosts the P.W.A world windsurfing event at Sotavento in the south.

Other attractions are the islands landscape and culture. There is also a Tefia Craft Village and a museum of archaeology and ethnography in Fuerteventura.
