The population of the city in the year 2005 was 1,463,281 and this makes it the fifth most populous city it the USA and the most populous in the state of Pennsylvania. The ethnic make-up of the city is quite diverse and the ethnic break-up of the population is as follows: Whites stands at top with forty-five per cent and followed by African-American with about forty-three per cent. Other major ethnic groups are Asians, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and Hispanic. The area of the city is 369.4 square kilometers.

Philadelphia is considered as the major hub for commerce, education and culture in the US and one of the oldest cities in the United States. During the18th century, the city was the first capital and also the most populous in the United States. During that period it was even considered as more important than that of New York City.
