Three Western European countries of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg have an economic union called Benelux. The name is derived from the first three letters of each countries name.

The Benelux Customs Union treaty was signed in London by the governments in exile of the three countries in 1944. In 1960 it was changed to Benelux Economic Union. The Benelux parliament, created in 1955, is composed of 7 members from Luxembourg, 21 from Belgium and another 21 from the Netherlands.

The Benelux is composed of The Benelux Economic Union; Benelux Parliament; Benelux Court of Justice; Benelux Trademarks Office and Benelux Designs Office. They are headquartered in Brussels and The Hague.

The Benelux Designs Office and the Benelux Trademarks Office have been replaced by the Benelux Organization for Intellectual Property.

Benelux is an economic union of three European countries; Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. As the name suggests, it is made up of taking the initial letters of the member countries.

The treaty to establish Benelux was signed in the year 1958 and was officially brought into force in the year 1960. The union promotes free movement of goods, workers, capital and services in the region. The secretary-general of the union is located in the Belgian capital of Brussels and the unification law of the region is achieved by the regulations of the council of ministers from member countries.

The particular area where the member countries of Benelux are active is intellectual property. They have Benelux Trademarks Office and Benelux Designs Office; both are located in Hague in the Netherlands. They are also going to bring into force the Benelux Organisation for Intellectual Property which will replace both the abovementioned offices.
